Welcome to Les Buts, the first Normandy Holiday Rentals property, proudly owned by George and his partner Sophie. They look forward to opening up their holiday home to you for your upcoming visit to the beautiful region of Manche in Lower Normandy.
George first fell in love with Normandy as a boy on a school holiday in the late 70’s. The bocage countryside, the empty golden beaches & dramatic wartime history, fascinated & connected him to the region. Returning to Normandy many times with friends and family over the years, he feels much at home, particularly in La Haye du Puits and his favourite bar ‘Le Bar D’En Bas’!
George and Sophie met through work in 2014 and George supported Sophie in her dream to set up her own wedding business in the UK. The following year, George mentioned that he had always dreamed of owning a French holiday home. Armed with that information and knowing they would soon be visiting Normandy (for Sophie’s first time), she arranged lots of house
viewings to get a feel of the region and whether she could see herself settling there in the future. On this occasion they didn’t find ‘the one’ but importantly Sophie got the bug and could see the ‘good life’ settling in France with George.
Returning in subsequent years to find a holiday home it was not until June 2017 during a visit with George’s parents and Hugo their chocolate Labrador, that their prayers were answered. Staying at Les Buts they instantly fell in love with the beautiful farmhouse and learned that it had been on the market previously. As they say in the North East, ‘Shy bairns get nowt’ so Sophie contacted the lovely owner to ask whether they would consider selling their stunning property. The following day whilst out for a stroll along the beach at St. Germain-Sur-Ay an email popped up saying they had accepted the offer! Needless to say the locals would have witnessed two lunatics jumping up and down on the beach with their wild dog followed by much dancing and hugging!! The cider flowed that evening.
Why they love Normandy so much!
As soon as they drive off the ferry, they immerse themselves in the local way of life; strolling around weekly markets; sampling the many wonderful dishes on offer (particularly the amazing seafood available at the coast); exploring the many woodland trails with Hugo; practicing the local lingo on very patient French waitresses and indulging in a local beverage or two (Cidre and Vin Rouge being their favourite tipples).
They love the way family life is at the heart of Normandy culture. To step back 30 years to a time when 24-hour supermarkets didn’t exist and Sundays were for church and family lunch, is definitely a refreshing change.
Les Buts is their first step over the water, but George and Sophie hope in time to move permanently to France and live the ‘good life’ they dream of; owning a small-holding, growing their own veg, keeping chickens and other animals, beekeeping, making bread, cheese and cider from their own produce and enjoying time together, which is rare in the UK.
George and Sophie warmly open their holiday home to you and hope that you enjoy your stay as much as they do when they visit.
